From September 20 to 22, 2011, 700 architects, engineers, federal employees, laboratory owners, facility managers, and other laboratory professionals (394 KB, 1 pp) gathered to discuss the latest in sustainable high-technology facility design and construction at the Labs21 2011 Annual Conference in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

 

 

Some attendees arrived on Monday to take a workshop, such as the Labs21 Introductory Course: High-Performance, Low-Energy Design led by Geoffrey Bell of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The Opening Plenary Session formally kicked off the conference Tuesday morning. Keynote speaker, The Honorable Lowell Weicker, Jr., spoke to the importance of public health preparedness in the United States and the vital role that laboratories play.

 

 

Technology Demonstrations were a popular feature at this year's conference, allowing exhibitors to explain and demonstrate industry tests, standards, and procedures.

Attendees could choose from dozens of technical sessions, symposia, and roundtable discussions.

The Technology and Services Fair Evening Reception, sponsored by Schneider Electric, provided an ideal opportunity to network, visit exhibitors' booths, catch up with laboratory sustainability contacts, and enjoy food and drinks.

 

 

The University of Rhode Island's Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences tour on Wednesday night allowed attendees to see both the teaching and research wings of this beautiful new laboratory.

The Go Beyond Awards Luncheon on Thursday recognized outstanding work in laboratory sustainability. At right, Matthew Berbee and John Onderdonk accept the Innovative Technology and Systems Award on behalf of the California Institute of Technology.

 

 

A tour of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Atlantic Ecology Division Laboratory on Thursday afternoon gave attendees the opportunity to see both the before and after of a sustainable marine laboratory renovation.
