Greening the Conference

In an effort to make the 2003 Annual Conference more sustainable, Labs21 purchased renewable power to offset the energy used onsite during the conference (in both meeting space and sleeping rooms). Labs21 purchased 53,000 kWh of regional wind energy through the Xcel Energy Windsource program.

Xcel Energy obtains the wind power it sells as Windsource from two wind farms in Colorado. The first site, Ponnequin, is the first commercial wind farm in Colorado. It is located just south of the Wyoming border and contains 44 turbines that can generate up to 30 MW of electricity. The second site, Peetz wind farm, also has a 30 MW capacity and is located just south of the Nebraska border.

Labs21 also worked to make the event as paperless as possible. The agenda, including speaker abstracts, presentations, and biographies, were available on-line prior to the conference and final presentations are now available on the website.
