On October 2-4, 2007, nearly 600 architects,
engineers, federal employees, laboratory owners, facility
managers, and other laboratory professionals gathered at the
Charleston Area Convention Center Complex in North Charleston,
South Carolina, to discuss the latest in sustainable laboratory
design and construction at the Labs21 2007 Annual Conference. |

John Knott, president and CEO
of the Noisette Company and Dr. John Kelly, vice president
for Public Service and Agriculture at Clemson University captivated
conference attendees during the Opening Plenary keynote address
on Tuesday morning. Mr. Knott (pictured right) spoke about
the challenges in converting a former Navy yard into a completely
sustainable community. Dr. Kelly then talked about the Clemson
University Restoration Institute, which is located on the
Noisette campus.

This year's conference offered nearly 70 technical
presentations, plus six Morning Roundtables, and four "Roll
Up Your Sleeves" Roundtables. Also featured this year
were four symposia focusing on specific areas of sustainability,
which featured presentations followed by panel discussions
that encouraged dialogue with the audience. Pictured below,

in the Middle East and North Africa symposia discuss region-specific
issues in sustainable development.

This year's Technology and Services Fair featured
60 organizations that showcased their innovative products
and services. The fair was sponsored by the International Institute
for Sustainable Laboratories in partnership with the Scientific
Equipment and Furniture Association. Attendees explored the
exhibit hall and spoke with exhibitors during the conference
and grand opening reception, breakfasts, breaks, and lunches. |

The Labs21 poster session provided an opportunity
for attendees to view innovative building designs and discuss
specific features with presenters who were available to answer
questions. |
