Monitoring Laboratory Building Energy Performance at UC Merced

Karl Brown, California Institute for Energy Efficiency

The Labs21 pilot partnership with the Univeristy of California at Merced is now at the stage of monitoring energy use in the first set of campus buildings including Science and Engineering I. The partnership is fulfilling its potential to achieve aggressive goals for energy efficiency, utilizing extensive monitoring for commissioning, and optimization of operations, as well as extending results to future buildings. This presentation will outline the analysis of the first year of full building operations, comparing energy use with benchmark-derived performance targets.

Biography:

Karl Brown is Deputy Director of the California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE), a part of the University of California Office of the President (UCOP). With over 20 years experience in energy systems, Karl manages Research and Design in end-use energy efficiency and assists with energy planning for University of California facilities. He has made substantial contributions to the energy efficiency of the new Merced campus, as well to the development and implementation of the UC Policy on Sustainable Practices.
