Optimizing High Performance Laboratories—An Owner's Perspective

Don Nurisso, P.E., University of California, San Francisco
Gary Shamshoian, P.E., Genentech

This presentation will discuss, compare, and contrast design, operation, and maintenance issues for data center biotech manufacturing facilities. It will discuss similarities and differences between the design of these types of facilities and will introduce the concept of "N," and the value of the "three R's" for various levels of reliability—and associated costs. It will present the "Top-12" tips for enhancing uptime and minimizing operating costs. It will also present the concept of total operating and operating costs analyses, for any plant, in order to achieve the best balance between cost and lifecycle value.
