Abstract: Title: How Much Does That Lab Equipment Consume Anyways?- Electrical Metering of Large Load Equipment Without The Need For Aan Electrician.
Ashlyn Norberg, University of Colorado Boulder
Over the past year at the University of Colorado-Boulder, the Green Labs Program in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability has been metering the electrical consumption of large load equipment, including ULT freezers at various temperatures, lab grade freezers and refrigerators, incubators, and other equipment. We have been gathering this information to provide feedback to lab members about the consumption of their units compared to other, more efficient possibilities that could meet their needs. This presentation will describe the set-up we have been using to meter even 208-230V equipment without the help of an electrician to do the metering (based on the Labs21 Survey Protocol), suggestions on lab equipment types to target for energy savings, and examples of what we have been able to accomplish.
Ashlyn is currently a third year undergraduate student at the University of Colorado-Boulder studying Environmental Engineering. She has been working with Kathy Ramirez-Aguilar and the CU Green Labs program for three years on reducing energy consumption, waste production, and water waste in the research labs on campus. As a staff member that joined the CU Green Labs Program soon after the program began, she has been instrumental in helping to build the program, engaging lab members, and keeping the operation of the program going.
