Emerging Fan Efficiency Codes, Standards, and Federal Regulations

Michael Ivanovich, AMCA International

AMCA International recently collaborated with the ASHRAE SSPC 90.1 Committee and its Mechanical Subcommittee and Fan Working Group to develop a fan efficiency requirement in the ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The specification is written around ANSI/AMCA 205-12 Energy Efficiency Classification for Fans, which defines how to rate the energy efficiency of fans. AMCA and ASHRAE have proposed a similar fan efficiency specification for the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code.

AMCA 260 Laboratory Methods of Testing Induced Flow Fans for Rating, at the time of this abstract, will soon be republished with a new methodology for applying AMCA 205 for rating induced flow fan efficiency. Meanwhile, the U.S. Dept. of Energy has initiated a rule-making process for commercial and industrial fans, which has laboratory fans in its scope. AMCA is collaborating with DOE, non-governmental organizations, and other industry stakeholders on the development of the federal regulation, which is expected to become effective in the 2019-2020 time frame.

This presentation will describe these emerging codes, standards, and regulations to the laboratory community, and provide a timeline for their implementation.

Biography:

International (AMCA), a not-for-profit trade association for manufacturers of fans, dampers, louvers and other equipment for commercial and industrial air systems. As such, Ivanovich develops and advocates consensus positions among AMCA's 300+ worldwide members on codes, standards, and regulations for energy efficiency and green construction, He is a full member of ASHRAE and is a consultant on SSPC 90.1 Committee. He also is active on ICC codes actions, and is leading AMCA's engagement with the U.S. Dept. of Energy's development of a fan-efficiency regulation. Ivanovich was formerly the editor-in-chief of Consulting-Specifying Engineer and HPAC Engineering magazines, and a senior research scientist for the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).
