Maximizing the Benefits of BIM on Lab Projects: Case Studies and Concepts
Bungane Mehlomakulu, PE, LEED AP, Integral Group
Tyler Disney, EIT, LEED AP BD+C, Integral Group
The technical session will use a series of laboratory project case studies from past laboratory projects to present lessons learned and strategies used for successful BIM integration. The presenters will introduce ways to implement various workflows used for BIM from contract negotiation through project close out. This overview will include the use of level of development documentation, BIM Implementation plans and leveraging model information onsite to resolve coordination issues as they arise. The case studies will aid to highlight lessons learned and the opportunities that BIM model offers to owners, architects, engineers and contractors throughout the design, construction and operational phases of a building. The session will address how to successfully harness the power of BIM platforms without becoming mired in modeling rework and project delays due to production inefficiencies. The speakers will present how a successful day-to-day production process works and provide examples of how to implement an efficient and powerful process without consuming design budgets.
Biographies:
With over 10 years of engineering consulting experience, Bungane's experience encompasses integrated project delivery, building information modeling, project development and multidisciplinary team leadership. His passion for sustainable buildings is aligned with Integral Group's values and he joined the team as Principal in 2012. With a focus on green building design and operation, he works with architects and owners to identify opportunities that lie outside the scope of traditional MEP services. He was involved in the early application of the early drafts of University of Southern California's campus BIM Implementation plans and the use of BIM platforms to deliver a federal courthouse from design to construction in 27 months. Bungane received the 40 under 40 Award in 2011 by Consulting-Specifying Engineers for his commitment to excellence. He continues to share his experience and knowledge through speaking engagements with various industry and community organizations.
Tyler heads up Integral Group West Coast's BIM practice, managing staff training, standards, and implementation documents. He started with Revit MEP 2009 shortly after joining Integral Group and quickly became the office BIM leader by pushing the envelope of what could be done with the platform on each project. As BIM platforms improve, he continues to expand the integration of BIM into project workflows and is driven to guide the cutting edge of practical BIM implementation. His was involved in the BIM Coordination for MEP design disciplines on a true-IPD project in a Big Room environment, as well as model production and project engineering on multiple lab projects. He has experience developing novel LOD definitions and scope definitions for MEP services to be incorporated into BIM Implementation Plans. Tyler is passionate about education in the industry, producing tutorial videos and writing online articles about the philosophy of virtual design modeling.
