Metabolizing Your BIM
John Tocci, Jr., Gilbane Building Company
John Myers, Gilbane Building Company
Tocci and Myers, two in-the-field Virtual Design and Construction experts, will deliver a presentation that boils down the key aspects of Building Information Modeling as they relate to sustainable laboratory design and construction. Most owners know that they want to use BIM for their projects, but without the right knowledge and execution plan, can be at risk for spending a lot of money on something that does not provide the right value.
Presenters will explain from start to finish the major components of a BIM enabled project, from the technology to the people to the overall process. They will review how to create a BIM framework so that the project can be a highly collaborative one.
It's a process that involves creating the standards that the design team is going to adhere to to creating standards that the construction team is going to adhere to. The presentation will also detail how it's possible to have a dashboard of reports throughout the design and construction process.
Finally, presenters will approach the discussion beginning with the specific challenges of laboratory design and construction and how you can use BIM to address those. Challenges such as operations disruption in an existing building (noise, vibration), lab space flexibility, being able to evaluate decisions in a timely fashion so that you do not have to go back and re-evaluate them.
Using BIM, you can develop standards specific to lab construction projects that, for example, require renovation adjacent to existing facilities. Presenters will discuss how BIM can work with those unique requirements as well as how to use virtual design and construction as a risk mitigation tool for these scenarios.
