Laboratory Ventilation Rate Assignment Using Control Banding

Implementing energy reduction strategies in laboratories is challenge that requires communication between facility managers, EHS professionals and laboratory occupants. Control banding is a strategy that has been proposed to meet this need. At Cornell, we have developed a systematic approach to control banding labs to assign operating ventilation rates based on chemical use, lab management practices and airflow patterns within the room. This control banding system has allowed us to recommend a 25% ventilation rate reduction for about 80% of the laboratory spaces visited. This presentation will review our control banding process for laboratory ventilation and discusses the mechanical challenges we have discovered that inhibit achieving the full energy savings potential.
Ellen had 10 years of lab experience before joining Cornell's Environmental Health and Safety department. She has been in the Research Safety Section for 2 and half years. Ellen's Masters degree is in Environmental Health and Safety Management from RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology).
