StoreSmart Meeting: Putting the Freeze on Cold Storage Energy Waste

An ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezer can use as much or more electricity as a typical single-family home. During this meeting, participants will discuss and plan cold storage priorities for the next two to ten years. Present issues include: testing; metering and data sharing; new design features; sample management and reduction; science-based temperature selection; and communications to scientists, procurement officers, and utility companies. These can be solved through an alliance of cold storage stakeholders: researchers, manufacturers, building operators, granting agencies, procurement specialists, utility companies, and eventually, end-of-life reclamation companies. The group will breakout into groups to plan collaborations and goals. It is hoped that these groups will meet by conference call periodically and report back in 2014 with progress achieved. All interested parties are invited and there will be an informal dinner gathering after the meeting.
