Fostering Sustainability in U-M Labs Through Behavior Changes
Sudhakar Reddy, University of Michigan
At the University of Michigan (U-M) we spearheaded a unique program called the Sustainable Lab Recognition Program to promote sustainability in our laboratories across the campus. To date nearly 80 labs have participated in this program. While there are some measurable benefits from this program, we also encountered some barriers and challenges. One such challenge is the reluctance of behavior change aspects that is integral for the program to be successful Literature has a wealth of information on how individual behavior impacts small workplaces to big incorporations. While we are working on promoting sustainability in our labs through green purchasing, pollution prevention, waste minimization, energy reduction and green chemistry, we quickly realized that behavior change matters is a key element as well Changes in behavior not only directly affect the progress toward sustainability, but they can also influence individuals to view or assess themselves. Changes or improvements in individual behavior to promote best lab practices lead to constructive change. This presentation will take a closer look at both successes and barriers that are encountered during the implementation of U-M's Sustainable Lab Recognition Program. In addition, triggers and motivators that affect behavior change among lab users will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the barriers and challenges to promote behavior changes in the labs to promote sustainability.
- Develop a program with triggers and motivators.
- After piloting it customize and apply in your situation.
