Working Toward Carbon Neutrality for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

As the owner's rep for NREL, CannonDesign has been working with this organization to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality for their entire campus. Their most recent project, the EMAPS (Energy, Material and Process at Scale), this goal became incredibly complex to achieve. Join Alicia Pandimos Maurer, AIA, LEED Senior Vice President at CannonDesign and a representative from NREL to discuss the sustainability goals set out for the building and how they are working toward those goals in design. They will take you through the performance specs and how the design-build team is continuing to meet the requirements.

The building is designed to reflect the research within, where highly technical manufacturing addressing the themes of the circular economy is taking place-biofuels, PV, advanced construction materials, and advanced electrification. The building contains specialty spaces to support the research from bench scale, to scale up and finally pilot manufacturing scale. Both the unique design-build delivery method and the carbon neutrality lessons learned will be used as a template for future NREL projects and future government projects.

Biographies:

Alicia Pandimos Maurer, AIA, LEED AP, is a laboratory designer whose 20+ years' experience has spanned an array of specialty sciences such as genetics, gene and cell therapy, personalized medicine, microbiology, cell culture, and PCR and sequencing. Alicia currently sits on the San Diego board for I²SL.
