Sustainable and Innovative Design for Today's Modern R&D Campus

The presentation will include a case study of the 5-year transformation of an existing two-building campus to a modernized three-building R&D campus (from 2016 to 2021). This campus expansion has allowed the organization to increase and expand R&D capabilities as well as attract industry talent. Throughout this journey the campus has faced numerous challenges, successes, and lessons learned. This presentation will focus on the following areas:

• Energy reduction opportunities in existing and new lab infrastructure.
• Redundancy and sustainability strategies for infrastructure (new vs. existing buildings).
• Adoption of renewable energy sources on campus.
• Renovation vs. new construction.
• Creating cost-effective flexibility in lab infrastructure.
• Leveraging emerging technology to improve occupant comfort, safety, and energy efficiency.

The presentation will focus on the topics above and will be supported with calculations, illustrations, and selection criteria that attributed to decisions.

Biographies:

Sam is a leader in the WSP Science & Technology practice with 15+ years of experience designing research and development facilities and buildings for critical applications including; cleanrooms, vivarium, high containment laboratories, laser labs, general research laboratories, core labs, and laboratories for higher education.

Tom is an operations leader at PepsiCo with 30+ years experience operating, maintaining, and renovating large commercial properties and laboratories. Tom oversaw the expansion of and continues to manage the operation and maintenance of the 335,000 SF critical global beverage R&D facility, pilot plant and technical production center at the New York campus.
