The Sustainable Laboratory User Manual is envisioned as a living resource that advocates a facility's sustainable purpose." The manual will enable laboratory owners, operators, and occupants to intelligently use, maintain, and renovate a building over time. Infrastructure functionality and optimal operations will be collated into an open sourced, expandable framework that delivers a comprehensive view of facility safety, flexibility, sustainability, and resilience.

The Sustainable Laboratory User Manual Working Group is a cross section of industry professionals, including building owners, architects, engineers, builders, and EHS professionals. The group formed committees of subject matter experts to tackle specific aspects of the guide, including lab planning, lab equipment, building design, building systems, lab operations, policy/reporting, and the structure of the guide itself. We have begun assigning Subcommittee Chairs, and monthly Subcommittee meetings are already underway, but it is not too late to get involved in one of these focus groups!

Join us as we show examples of how this manual can be beneficial to a variety of stakeholders: building owners, scientists, designers, builders, maintenance, and lab operations teams.

Biographies:

Maria Montgomery is an Associate and Project Architect at Perkins&Will in Atlanta, specializing in higher education and laboratory design. In addition to being a project architect, she also serves as BIM Manager and Sustainability Manager on a variety of projects. She is also one of the Atlanta studio's Design Technology Leaders and has become a USGBC LEED AP and WELL AP. With Maria's attention to detail, constant strive to learn, and outgoing personality, she brings a memorable energy to all projects she works on and presentations she gives.

Jacob Werner, AIA, is a Senior Project Architect at Perkins&Will, in Boston. Jacob has devoted his 20-year career to designing intuitive environments for scientific discovery. His recent research efforts include the I2SL Best Practices Guide: Laboratory Resilience and ongoing research into Embodied Carbon reduction in lab projects.
