Why Safety Cabinet Fire Safety Requirements Are More Stringent in Europe than in the United States
Roland Bieder, Düperthal Sicherheitstechnik GmbH & Co. KG
The importance of sustainable laboratories and their furniture, such as safety cabinets, is constantly increasing. The importance of such facilities are reviewed in the conjoint research project Lab 2020. The exchange of experiences among manufactures, planners, and operators/users enables them to realize practical as well as innovative ideas. Safety cabinets that are designed and tested in accordance with the European standard DIN EN 14470-1 have a very high grade fire-resistance (up to 90 minutes). This presentation will focus on the reason for such a high protection level on the basis of a scenario and time table of a fire. The presentation also will compare the test results of fire chamber tests of safety cabinets designed in accordance with European and U.S. standards. Finally, the presentation will show the influence of standards and research projects such as Lab 2020 on the design of high-quality safety cabinets. The benchmarks can be measured in areas such as upper-level style, user-friendliness, and increased lifetime.
