Tour and Reception at the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine Research III Building

Overview

Attendees of the Labs21 2009 Annual Conference had the opportunity to tour the newly completed Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine Research III facility.

Details about Research III

The IU School of Medicine educates the second largest medical student body in the U.S. Its research complex in Indianapolis spans almost an entire campus block and provides an environment that stimulates creative and collaborative research. Research III, the final component in the three-building cancer research complex, is a 254,000-square-foot facility that will open doors for innovative and life-saving therapies, especially in cancer treatment.

Research III will facilitate cancer research related to hematology/oncology, surgery, radiation oncology and urology, and the Center for Immunobiology.  The facility will also house the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute, which studies neurological and mental disorders; the IU national gene vector laboratory, which provides scientists with gene transfer expertise and vectors for clinical research projects; and a DNA bank and cell repository.

Within the six-floor building are more than 100 modular laboratories and space for 90 new faculty members, a BSL3 research suite and a class 10,000 clean room. Administrative space includes a 200-seat auditorium, a 100-seat lecture hall, and shared conferencing facilities.

Energy conservation was a critical design factor for Research III.  To offset the high amount of energy needed to operate a research facility, the building uses three large heat wheels to recover energy from the general building and laboratory exhaust systems.  In the winter, the wheels transfer heat from exhaust air to supply air, raising the temperature of the incoming air and reducing the burden on the building's heating system.  In the summer, the reverse happens – exhaust air cools supply air and reduces its humidity.

To reduce the need for parking and encourage alternate methods of transportation, showers and locker rooms are available to employees who arrive by bike or on foot. Research III also offers direct access to the Clarian People Mover, an elevated train that connects the IU School of Medicine campus with local Clarian Health hospitals and facilities.

Tour Logistics

The IU School of Medicine is located less than two miles from the Indiana Convention Center. A reception of hors d'oeuvres preceded the tour, and transportation was provided to and from the facility.
