Integrating State-of-the-Art, Energy-Efficient Research Laboratories Into Older University Laboratory Buildings
Lee VanDeKerchove, AIA, LEED® AP,
VDK Architects
Allan Palmer, University of California, Berkeley
The presenters (the architect and client representative) will describe their experience in integrating new research laboratories into Morgan Hall, a 1965 vintage laboratory and classroom building on the University of California, Berkeley campus. This LEED Gold project will act as a demonstration for future laboratory projects to be implemented in the building as funds become available. The presentation will highlight optimized performance in the areas of daylighting, lighting controls, HVAC systems, and water use reduction.
The presentation will conclude with a short video prepared by students who are part of the Building Sustainability Program on the campus. It is envisioned that the video will act as a "user manual" for future laboratory occupants, instructing them on the operation and maintenance of the sustainable features built into the laboratoriess.
