BIM After Construction

Birgitta Foster, Sandia National Laboratories

This presentation will provide an overview of how owners can use building information modeling (BIM) post-construction to support the building's life cycle. The most effective use of BIM after construction is sharing the embedded building information with an owner's existing facilities management systems (FMS). Owners must first, however, determine what information in their asset management applications they want provided within the model. A process developed to define the owners' BIM deliverable requirements is then presented, as well as methods to interface the model with existing facility management systems. The presentation will also include a demonstration of "The view of the future for FM" using BIM with an icon-based menu to provided immediate access to equipment information for work order planning. There will also be a discussion on what is holding owners back and what they can do now to position themselves to utlize BIM after construction.

Biography:

Birgitta Foster has been a strong supporter of BIM for both the architecture, engineering, and construction world and for the owner. While working at Sandia National Laboratories over the past 4.5 years, Ms. Foster has become increasingly aware of how BIM can help owners with post-construction activities such as operations and maintenance, space planning, and asset management. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, Ms. Foster began her career in Houston, Texas, first as a pump application engineer at Ingersoll Rand, then with the engineering firm of John Brown LCC to work on equipment retrofits of existing overseas refineries. In 1989, she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to work for a Caterpillar dealer as a project engineer on larger engine pump and generator packages for foreign clients. Later, Ms. Foster joined Klinger Constructor as a project manager at Intel's Rio Rancho facility while pursuing an Executive Master of Business Administration at the University of New Mexico. Ms. Foster began working for Sandia National Laboratories in 2005 as a project estimator. Currently, she is the facilities BIM champion and partnership development lead.
