Hospital Commissioning Basics
Ron Wilson, Mazzetti & Associates Commissioning Group
Commissioning is far more involved than simply installing equipment
and testing its operation, especially in today's high performance
and integrated facilities. The advent of Electronic Medical Records
(EMR) and electronic imaging, as well as Voice over IP (VoIP) and
Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems, have pushed the need for the
entire facility to interact as a whole. Add to this the
Green Guidelines for Healthcare (GGHC) recommendations and LEED®
certification and there is plenty of motivation to develop a process
to prove all systems interact properly together and react to changes
in conditions. The key is to balance the need to prove the systems
with the cost (dollars and time) of the effort.
This session introduces the concept of commissioning to those people
who would like to understand what is involved. The session will
explain the reasons behind commissioning and why it is necessary,
as well as dispel some myths about what constitutes commissioing.
In addition, we will describe a process that can be used to develop
a commissioning plan including the various components needed to
complete the process.
Biography:
Ron Wilson is a Principal with Mazzetti &
Associates and is the Managing Principal of the Irvine, California
office. With over 25 years experience designing and commissioning
highly complex building types such as Hospitals, Laboratories, Data
Centers, and Semiconductor Fabrication facilities, he is well aware
of the challenges faced in providing a fully functional and integrated
facility. Ron is the electrical lead for the Mission Critical practice
at Mazzetti & Associates and as healthcare facilities have become
more "data" centric in recent years, he has been called
on to assess facility designs for reliability and operability at
several large hospital replacements in the West. Given his experience
with complex facilities, Ron has been the Principal-in-Charge of
Mazzetti & Associates Commissioning Group since 2003. Work in
this arena includes leading the commissioning team for many data
centers and development of commissioning standards for several healthcare
and data center clients.
