I2SL Invites Your Expertise!

In working to expand the Labs21 Annual Conference, Workshops, and its own sustainable laboratory initiatives, I2SL looked to experts in the laboratory community for your thoughts on various initiatives. Participants lent their ideas and thoughts on various initiatives throughout the Annual Conference.

Marine Research Laboratories
September 16, 3:30 p.m.
Meeting Room C1

The Labs21 2008 Annual Conference keynote speaker, Marcia McNutt; several delegates from Hurghada, Egypt; and representatives from Florida Atlantic University shared information on developing marine research programs and considered options for setting up exchange programs for scientists and students.

Combined Heat and Power – An Overview
September 17, 11a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Meeting Room C2

Combined heat and power (CHP) as a technology option for buildings provides an exceptional financial opportunity for meeting operational requirements while reducing atmospheric carbon emissions because of the multiple services provided from the energy being supplied to the technology. The financial and energy efficiency benefits of CHP technologies in energy intensive laboratories and other high-performance buildings must be recognized and the applications increased. This session taught attendees about potential CHP applications for facilities.

Student Design Competition
September 17, 1 p.m.
Meeting Room C1

In 2004, Labs21 held its first annual Student Design Competition. More than 200 student projects were submitted from the United States and Canada. In an effort to continue this project, I2SL discussed the opportunity to offer a second competition, this time expanding eligibility beyond North America. This lunchtime discussion focused on potential funding sources, design locations, and partners for the event, which will help to inspire a new generation of sustainable laboratory designers.

European Labs21 Conference
September 18, 9 – 10:30 a.m.
Meeting Room C1

Are you ready for the Labs21 conference to truly go international? I2SL and the Higher Education Environmental Performance Improvement Initiative (HEEPI) met to discuss the possibility of holding a future Labs21 Annual Conference in Europe.

I2SL and AIA Meeting – Creating a Laboratory Design Guide Resource
September 17, 2:30 p.m.
Meeting Room C1

I2SL and the American Institute for Architecture (AIA) invited the Labs21 Community to learn about and comment on the potential creation of a comprehensive laboratory design guide. This guide will provide guidance for a variety of laboratory types and will include strategies for energy and environmental sustainability. I2SL and AIA have received support from several federal agencies for creating this resource in light of federal initiatives to promote U.S. energy independence. This meeting helped I2SL and AIA determine if similar interest exists in the private sector.
