Greening the Conference
Each year, Labs21 makes every effort to green its
annual conference and reduce the event's impact on the environment.
The following efforts are examples of how Labs21 strove to make
its 2008 conference more sustainable:
-
Labs21 chose a host city that is dedicated to
reducing its energy use and becoming more sustainable over the
next 15 years. San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed recently unveiled his
plan to make San Jose the newest sustainable city in the nation.
-
Labs21 worked with the San Jose McEnery Convention
Center to have recycling bins in all meeting spaces during the
conference.
-
Labs21 requested the use of recycled-content and/or
recyclable containers for all conference meals. Labs21 also
used non-disposable glasses, dishes, and silverware whenever
possible.
- The Technology and Services fair featured a number of sustainable
features including:
- Carpet made from post-consumer recycled material.
- Biodegradable trash bags and wastebaskets made from 100%
recycled materials.
- Recycled paper and signage products.
- A “How-to”
section in the online exhibitor’s kit to help exhibitors
reduce their environmental impact before, during, and after
the show.
- The Labs21 Conference strives to generate as little paper waste
as possible. Therefore, attendees lists, conference messages,
conference presentations, and conference certificates will all
be sent out electronically.
