Evening Tour at Lake Nona Medical City

The 2014 I2SL Annual Conference evening tour took place at Lake Nona Medical City, a 650-acre health and life sciences park in Orlando, Florida. Lake Nona Medical City is helping to define Orlando as a destination for health care, research, and medical education. After an introductory drive around Lake Nona Medical City, tour attendees had the opportunity to tour the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and the University of Florida Research and Academic Center. Tour participants also qualified for 1.5 continuing education credits.

The Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute is a LEED® Gold certified building. It opened in 2009 as a founding partner of Lake Nona Medical City. The research at Sanford-Burnham focuses on the metabolic origins of disease with an emphasis on obesity-related diabetes. The building includes glass-enclosed labs that promote collaboration, a vivarium, state-of-the-art imaging, and other resources for exploratory pharmacology. Exhaust air from the labs is sent through three enthalpy recovery wheels to reduce energy use. Low-flow plumbing fixtures contribute to water efficiency.

The University of Florida Research and Academic Center is a 106,000 square foot LEED Platinum certified facility that houses the College of Pharmacy, the Center for Pharmacometrics and Systems Pharmacology, the Institute for Therapeutic Innovation, the Institute on Aging, and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The building opened in 2012 and brings together researchers, clinicians, teachers, and students. Sustainable features of the building include daylight harvesting, sun-shading devices, chilled-beam technology, heat pump recovery, solar thermal panels, photovoltaic panels, and green roofs.
