Opening Plenary Panel: The Future of Labs and Carbon

Hear from a variety of lab owner/representative, developer, designer, and governmental perspectives on the challenges labs face and the opportunities they will have to reduce carbon emissions and move toward a net zero emissions future for labs and the greater community. Moderated by Chris Incarvito, Associate Provost for Science Initiatives at Yale University, this group will discuss what decarbonization means to labs, how to measure decarbonization goals, and how the respective roles of the panelists (architect, owner, municipality) lend themselves to collaboration or can address barriers to engagement.

Panelists:

Jennifer Ballew, City of Cambridge, Massachusetts: Jennifer is a Sustainability Project Planner for the Climate Team at the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Prior to that, she worked for 15+ years as a scientist-turned-sustainability professional, leveraging her experience in biotech to work in impactful, ESG-oriented roles at MIT and at My Green Lab. She has been a member of I²SL since 2018, as well as a presenter, and she founded Cambridge Sustainable Labs in 2018, a working group with 100+ members from over 30 local organizations.

David Bendet, CBRE: An architect with more than 30 years of experience managing the design and construction of life science facilities, David is focused on achieving excellence in real estate strategies, building a center of excellence, driving operational strategy, and leading business development activities for CBRE Life Sciences. He is the I²SL Norther California Chapter president.

Steven Guenther, Carnegie Mellon University: Steven has more than 30 years of professional practice serving cultural, educational, and healthcare institutions. In his current role of Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management and Campus Services and University Engineer, he is responsible for stewardship of the buildings, infrastructure, and utilities at CMU. He serves as a co-chair of the Provost’s Sustainability Initiative, and his division is the home to the university’s Green Practices efforts. Steven also served on the Executive Board of Directors for AASHE.

Alicia Pandimos-Maurer, CannonDesign, AIA, LEED AP: Alicia is a laboratory designer whose 20+ years' experience has spanned an array of specialty sciences such as genetics, gene and cell therapy, personalized medicine, microbiology, cell culture, and PCR and sequencing. Alicia currently sits on the San Diego Chapter board for I²SL.
