N2O as a Replacement for SF6, the ASHRAE Standard 110

Martin Burke, Technical Safety Services, Inc.

ASHRAE Standard 110, for which the U.S. Green Building Council offers LEED® credits for new construction under the Environment and Atmosphere category, is effectively based upon the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an extremely potent greenhouse gas. SF6 emissions are being curtailed by state and federal agencies, so a replacement needs to be found. This presentation shows TSS' successful work over the past four years in developing and applying nitrous oxide (N2O) as a replacement for SF6, thereby reducing our carbon-equivalent emissions by more than 99 percent.
