Building Information Modeling for Laboratories: From Concept to Facility Management

This presentation will discuss building information modeling (BIM), starting with process interaction and the use of a model during concept design through construction documents, shop drawings, fabrication, construction, and opportunities for use in facility management. The presentation will include a discussion about a BIM management plan and coordinating with the client, design team, and construction team. The speakers will address lessons learned and case studies from three sustainable (LEED® Platinum) laboratory projects and provide information about collaboration between owners, designers, contractors, and subcontractors, as well as what the future might hold for facility managers.
The speakers will also discuss smart phone technology used in facility management and laser scanning of existing facilities.
Biographies:
Kevin Brettmann is the director of science and technology for JE Dunn Construction. He has been a speaker at the Labs21 Annual Conference in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011, as well as a moderator at the Labs21 Annual Conference for the past two years. Mr. Brettmann is the author of "CM Partnering Agreements Improve Value & Quality," which appeared in the R&D Magazine 2005 Lab Design Handbook, has been published in Pharmaceutical Engineering, and was conference leader for the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering's Research Facilities: Latest Trends Conference.
Eric Hall is a LEED AP, an associate member of the American Institute of Architects, and a former member of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) Young Executives. After receiving a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Kansas, Mr. Hall went to work for JE Dunn in the Superintendent Trainee Program. In 2009, Mr. Hall was named vice president and BIM director for JE Dunn Midwest. Mr. Hall is currently the president of Innovations 10.01, a computer software company with products specializing in BIM integration and facility management. Mr. Hall was a speaker at the Labs21 Annual Conference in 2011 and the AGC BIM Forum in 2009 and 2010.
