Using Building Information Modeling-based Web Portal for Facility Energy Monitoring, Work Orders Management, and Disaster Recovery at General Services Administration Region 4

Igor Starkov, EcoDomus
Michael Ruiz, Applied Software

During this presentation, the speakers will explain how building information modeling (BIM) can be used for energy modeling, how to connect BIM models with building automation systems, which open standards exist for facility data handover during design and construction (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange, OmniClass, the International Society for Optics and Photonics), and how to integrate BIM with facility management software, such as computer maintenance management system and computer-aided facility management.

During this presentation, the speakers will demonstrate the General Services Administration (GSA) Region 4 Web Portal. This web-based application provides GSA with a map-based dashboard that reports energy usage across the whole southeast region, or by state, city, or individual buildings. The energy portal also displays BIM models in three dimensions, so facility managers can virtually navigate to any space within the facilities and review assets properties. Building sensors and meters receive both design-intent and current energy operational values.

Biographies:

Igor Starkov has 18 years of international business management experience, and dedicated 10 of those years to the construction software industry. Mr. Starkov is co-founder and president of the San Francisco-based EcoDomus Inc., a company focused on improving the way buildings are managed using virtual models, such as BIM. Mr. Starkov is a recipient of the FIATECH Celebration of Engineering and Technology Innovation award for his "BIM for Facilities Management" project at Texas A&M University. Mr. Starkov has been featured in the recent ENR Magazine article on "Lifecycle Data Management using BIM," and has spoken at more than 50 construction industry events. Mr. Starkov holds a master's degree in applied mathematics and computer science from Moscow University in Russia, and an Executive Masters of Business Administration from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Michael Ruiz, the vice president of BIM strategies and business development at Applied Software, has more than 15 years of experience as an architectural designer for a wide range of institutional and commercial clients. Mr. Ruiz piloted the first BIM project for Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum in 2003 and has since leveraged this experience to drive a collective approach to many types of construction projects. Mr. Ruiz's proven record of design excellence, combined with his technical skills, has resulted in high-performance buildings that meet the functional and aesthetic expectations for building owners and users.
