Laney College's Building Technician Curriculum: Preparing High-Performance Building Operators

Chuck Frost, Laney College

Laney College, located in Oakland, California, offers certificates and degrees in commercial HVAC and building automation systems for building operators. Funded by a National Science Foundation Grant, Laney has developed an industry-vetted curriculum that focuses specifically on knowledge and skills for the high performance building operator, including courses in data analysis, load calculations, commissioning, energy-efficient control sequences, and control systems networking. We will provide a brief overview of our curriculum and laboratory strategies to teach high-performance building skill sets traditionally underrepresented in building operator curricula.
