Broadly Deploying Smart Laboratories in Research Universities

Fred Bockmiller, P.E., CEM, LEED AP®, University of California (UC), Irvine

During the last decade, UC Irvine has developed an approach to laboratory design that begins with the Labs21 Tool Kit and accelerates beyond. Now, in an effort to meet our 2014 goals for carbon reduction, we are deploying these features in retrofit applications. This poster will describe before and after conditions for a number of laboratory facilities and what we learned during construction and implementation.

Biography:

Fred Bockmiller has worked at UC Irvine since 1988, as the engineering manager in the Facilities Management Department. Mr. Bockmiller is actively involved in all aspects of facilities management, from initial planning, through final acceptance, to operation, maintenance, and renovation of the entire campus and its extensive utility and HVAC infrastructure. A magna cum laude graduate of the California Maritime Academy, Mr. Bockmiller is a professional engineer, certified energy manager, and LEED AP. Additionally, Mr. Bockmiller has completed graduate certificate programs in supervision, management, and leadership through UC Irvine. In 2010, Mr. Bockmiller completed Harvard's Senior Executives in State and Local Government program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Over the last 20 years, Mr. Bockmiller has been a major part of the process of doubling the size of the UC Irvine campus and the creation of its award-winning energy systems.
