Green Laboratory Continuous Improvement Guide: Stages and Stakeholders

Wednesday, September 24, 2014
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Green laboratory initiatives have grown in complexity and matured in many directions. How do you get started? Who should be invited? Is your campus as far as it can go? Which initiative is right for our campus?

I2SL convened about 30 Green Labs advocates from across the United States to develop a guide that describes about fifteen separate Green Laboratory initiatives. They range from HVAC mechanical upgrades to ultra-low freezers, and from ventilation safety to researcher engagement. The guide is a series of grids that describe what beginning to advanced efforts might look like, and that identifies eight stakeholders and issues that often need integration. These issues of course include researchers, facilities, safety, and building design, and often-overlooked purchasing, financing, and end-of-life concerns.

Several initiatives' grids were shared at this session/workshop. This process will continue focusing on several initiatives each year, and I2SL requests additional input from the green labs community. The document may be viewed here.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about a system being developed to address the full range of sustainability opportunities within the laboratory space and the services to it.
  • Learn why this system is important whether you start with a highly rated sustainable facility or are beginning with a poor performing lab building.
  • Learn how to get involved with this effort.
