On September 22-24, more than 600 architects, engineers, federal employees, laboratory owners, facility managers, and other laboratory professionals gathered to discuss the latest in sustainable high-technology facility design and construction at the Labs21 2009 Annual Conference. The conference was held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, located next to the Indiana State Capitol Building (pictured at left).

 

 

On Monday evening, conference attendees were given the opportunity to tour the newly completed Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine Research III facility. A reception preceded the event, allowing attendees to mingle, network, and enjoy refreshments. After a welcome presentation in the auditorium of the Research III facility, tour attendees were split into small groups. Stations were set up throughout the building, staffed by people intimately involved with the project, who shared their knowledge of Research III's design and operation. Pictured at left, a group tours the mechanical space.

Conference attendees were also given the opportunity to tour Eli Lilly and Company's new Building 362 on Wednesday night, and the C. C. Perry “K” Generating Station and District Steam System on Thursday afternoon.

Picture of John C. Lechleiter, Ph.D., delivering the opening keynote address
John C. Lechleiter, Ph.D., chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Eli Lilly and Company, provided the keynote address during the Opening Plenary Session on Tuesday. Representatives from Indianapolis Economic Development, Inc., the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also spoke.

 

 

The Technology and Services Fair opened on Tuesday, allowing manufacturers and service providers that meet the needs of high-tech facilities to introduce their technologies, systems, and services to the Labs21 Annual Conference audience. Sixty-nine organizations exhibited, representing a diverse and exciting range of technologies and services.

On Tuesday night, the Labs21 Technology and Services Fair combined with the exhibitors of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education for an evening reception, allowing attendees from both events to mingle and connect with vendors while enjoying refreshments and live music.

Morning Roundtable sessions on Wednesday and Thursday allowed for interactive discussions on the ideas and challenges faced by today's high-tech facilities.

Picture of the Go Beyond Awards Luncheon
The Go Beyond Awards Luncheon on Thursday offered a final opportunity for all attendees to come together to solidify professional connections made during the week. A panel presented the Go Beyond Awards to this year's winners—individuals, organizations, projects, and laboratory manufacturers that went beyond the status quo to minimize the environmental impacts of laboratory and other high-tech facilities and laboratory equipment. To wrap up the event, Phil Wirdzek provided a summary of the conference and a look ahead to next year's conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
