BIM as a Platform for Sustainable Operations and Management of High-Tech Facilities
Thursday, September 26, 2013
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has gained considerable importance in the design and construction of laboratories and related high-technology facilities. Since 2005, I2SL has included BIM sessions and symposia in the Labs21® Annual Conferences. More recently, I2SL with its partners—the National Institute for Building Science's buildingSMART alliance (bSa) and International Facility Management Association's (IFMA's) R&D Council—have undertaken an effort to elevate BIM as a platform to ensure facility's sustainability objectives. The partners see this application of BIM as fulfilling the facility's sustainability life-cycle.
This symposium began with a brief description of the collaborative efforts of the project partners followed by a series of presentations that share the initial steps of BIM implementation including examples of contract language, testimonials from clients, tools that are now available, and review of projects that implement BIM for operations and management. Facilitated panel sessions allowed for discussion among the session presenters and attendees. The session wrapped up with an update from I2SL and bSa on their plans to expand this effort to promote BIM as an operations and maintenance tool.
